LSU women’s basketball has landed a commitment from a highly decorated mid-major star in East Carolina’s Amiya Joyner on Tuesday. A 6-foot-2 forward who spent three seasons at East Carolina as a starter, Joyner nearly averaged a double double all three seasons, proving herself in the American Athletic Conference year after year.

Joyner entered the portal on April 10 and announced the decision on social media:

“First, I want to thank God for giving me the ability and strength to play the sport I love. I wouldn’t be here without His guidance and blessings,” Joyner wrote in a post. “Thank you to Coach Kim, you’ve been like a second mom to me. Your belief in me, your support, and your guidance have meant the world. I’m also grateful for all the other coaches who’ve helped me grow on and off the court. To my teammates, the memories we’ve made and the bond we’ve built will stay with me forever.

“After a lot of prayer and long talks with my family, l’ve decided to enter the transfer portal. This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right one for my future. I’m thankful for the journey and excited for what’s next.”

Joyner was a first-team All-AAC selection this past season, averaging 15 points and 9.2 rebounds on 48.1 percent shooting from the field. She posted 30 points and 16 rebounds in a win over UNC Wilmington and 25 points and 10 rebounds against South Carolina early in the season. In 32 games, she also had 34 blocks and 36 steals, further showing her activity level.

Out of high school, Joyner was the No. 69 player in the country and No. 15 forward, making her the highest ranked recruit in ECU’s history, choosing to stay close to home.

Joyner joins Kate Koval and Grace Knox as the primary bigs in the frontcourt as Kim Mulkey looks to retool her roster heading into a pivotal season. Aneesah Morrow was just drafted into the WNBA, while Sa’Myah Smith, Jersey Wolfenbarger, and Aalyah Del Rosario all entered the portal. Now, Joyner and company look to compliment Flau’Jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams on a new-look LSU squad.
