BREAKING: Georgia DT Walter Mathis commits to LSU
With 24 hours until LSU kicks off the home opener of the 2024 college football season, the Tigers added another piece for the future with a commitment from Georgia defensive tackle Walter “Buddy” Mathis.
Mathis, a senior at Calvary Baptist Day in Savannah (Ga.), picked LSU over 30-plus college offers, which included programs like Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Miami, Texas and more.
Mathis is the fourth defensive tackle commitment this cycle for first-year LSU defensive line coach Bo Davis. Mathis joins Texas 4-star Zion Williams, Texas 3-star Dilan Battle and Florida 4-star Brandon Brown as the four defensive tackles committed to LSU in the 2025 class.
LSU defensive ends coach Kevin Peoples has also landed a pair of Top 100 prospects at the EDGE rusher position in Indiana’s Damien Shanklin and Florida’s Jesse Harrold.
Mathis is the 26th commitment into LSU’s 2025 recruiting haul, which remains the No. 3 class on the On3 Industry Rankings, trailing only Ohio State and Alabama. Georgia and Auburn sit behind the Tigers as the other programs ranked in the Top 5 nationally.

Davis, who was previously the defensive line coach at Texas before returning to his alma mater in January, has brought LSU immediate results by way of adding bodies in the trenches after he continued recruiting targets he had circled while on staff with the Longhorns.
For Mathis, a relationship that began when Davis was in Austin has resulted in another commitment for LSU.
“I like the coaching staff at LSU, and on one of my visits there, Coach Bo Davis just arrived from Texas, and him coming from Texas to Louisiana and recruiting me (showed) how he (pushed) for me as a person and as a player.”
With 26 commitments for the 2025 recruiting cycle, LSU is expected to sign around 30 prospects by the time December’s Early Signing Period and February’s National Signing Day arrive.
