It’s the start of LSU’s bye week, meaning for the first time this season, there’s a break from the routine grind coaches and players have become used to over the past two months.

After a 62-0 win over Army, LSU enters the bye week 6-2 overall and 4-1 in SEC play with its next game against Alabama on Nov. 4. In Tuscaloosa.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly went on the Paul Finebaum show on Monday afternoon to talk about the bye week, what the schedule looks like, and an early look at the Tide. He started by laying out the plans for the week and what goes into the week for his players and staff.

“Today we’ll close the book on Army,” Kelly said. “Go through the tape, grade it, talk to our team about what we need to do better, what we did well, and what we learned from the game. Then we’ll have a couple of days on the field where we’ll be really specific about the things we need to be better at. The last 36 hours for our staff have been  a lot of self scouting and things we need to be better at. We’ll practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, have some conditioning on Thursday, then we’ll have recovery over the weekend and add an extra day of preparation for Alabama on Monday. We’ll have the staff on the road during this evaluation period on the road recruiting as well.”

Kelly will be busy on Saturday, though, making a trip up to Michigan to see his youngest son, Kenzel, play at Grand Valley State.

“I’ll get a chance to recruit this week, but on Saturday, I’ll get a chance to see my youngest son play for the first time this year,” Kelly said. “He plays linebacker for Grand Valley State, where I started my career. One of the tough parts of this business is you don’t get the chance to see my son play, so I’ll fly up to Michigan and get to see my son play and I’m really excited about that.”

Looking ahead to LSU vs. Alabama

Kelly’s team has its biggest game of the season in two Saturdays on the road and has already begun looking at the Tide and looking at the keys to Nick Saban’s team.

Alabama enters 7-1 on the season, with a 34-24 loss to Texas as the lone blemish on their schedule. Wins over Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Tennessee highlight a 5-0 start in SEC play with LSU the toughest game on their schedule.

Kelly defeated Alabama in his first matchup at LSU last year in a 32-31 overtime thriller, but this time his team will have to go on the road to pull off the massive win.

“We start with the obvious: Just a well coached football team in all three phases,” Kelly said of Alabama. ”I think the quarterback in Milroe is really much more comfortable within the offensive structure. He’s to the point where he’s going to take shots down the field. He has an offensive menu that’s in front of him he feels comfortable with. Coach Reese has done a great job laying out the things they’re going to do and executing them. Defensively, this is the best defense we’ll see this year. Talent-wise, A&M rivals them, but the structure of what coach Steele does is outstanding. We know what’s in front of us, this is an outstanding football team. Coach Saban has his team playing very well and it will be a great football game in Tuscaloosa.”
