On Monday afternoon’s press conference, LSU’s Brian Kelly said junior defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo will likely miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery.

Wingo missed the Army game dealing with a lower body injury, seemingly trying to recover from a lingering injury.

Now, he’s set to miss at least six weeks, per Kelly.

Without Wingo, Jordan Jefferson and Jacobian Guillory have been tasked with stepping up and will once again need to have strong outings against Alabama. Starter Maason Smith has also improved as the season wears on and gives the Tigers a chance to disrupt the Tide’s offense. Kelly says the rotation will be the same as it was against Army, saying it is “next man up.” There’s confidence in Kelyl in the rest of the room as it prepares for one of its toughest challenges of the season.

Kelly’s team still has two more SEC games coming after the Alabama game, against Florida and Texas A&M. The defense has been a struggle for LSU this season, but after showing some improvements over the past two weeks, there’s a hope that the scheme is starting to come together even despite injuries.

Wingo has been one of the top defensive linemen in the SEC this year and a consistent presence for LSU since arriving on campus prior to the 2022 season. Now, LSU will rely on its depth to patch the holes up front entering the final three SEC games.

Last year, LSU beat Alabama 32-31 on a memorable two-point conversion that sent Tiger Stadium into a frenzy. It was a landmark win for Kelly and now he’ll have to do it without his star defensive tackle.
