Brian Kelly updates LSU OL Garrett Dellinger's status following injury at Texas A&M
LSU guard Garrett Dellinger’s injury suffered Saturday in the first half at Texas A&M was a high-ankle sprain, coach Brian Kelly confirmed Tuesday.
Kelly appeared optimistic that the Tigers’ veteran starter may be available to return soon with the benefit of this week’s open date on the schedule.
“He had a high-ankle sprain, so we’re hoping that this week becomes a recovery week for him,” the coach said.
Dellinger earned starts in each of this first two seasons for the Tigers in 2021 and 2022 before solidifying that role the entirety of last season.
He has played in 41 games in his career, including 30 starts total, but has been banged up some this season, including missing the Tigers’ home opener Sept. 7 against Nicholls State with an “upper-body injury.”

LSU has also been without redshirt freshman offensive lineman Tyree Adams, out of St. Augustine, for the past three weeks after suffering, Kelly said, “what would be considered a sports hernia” and undergoing surgery.
Redshirt freshman Paul Mubenga, out of Buford, Ga., replaced Dellinger on Saturday in the eventual 38-23 loss to the Aggies.
The Tigers struggled to establish a rushing attack throughout the game and finished with just 24 yards on 23 carries, or a sack-adjusted 40 yards on 22 carries.
Kelly was asked Tuesday how much Dellinger’s absence may have exacerbated that issue.
“Look, he’s the starter, but one guy going down did not affect the running game to the level that it did,” the coach said. “There are bits and pieces to it, and we did not win some individual matchups. We made some mistakes, uncharacteristically from some other guys that are on the offensive line, and quite frankly we made some choices to run into boxes that were not conducive and we should’ve been doing some other things. So it was a little bit of all those things.”
No. 16 LSU (6-2, 3-1) returns to Tiger Stadium on Nov. 9 to host No. 14 Alabama (6-2, 3-2).
