On Wednesday afternoon, Brian Kelly fielded various questions from the media and was able to give an update on freshman quarterback Colin Hurley, who was in a car accident in January and found unresponsive after the initial crash.

Following reports indicated that Hurley was expected to make a full recovery, but the timetable has been in question.

“Because of his age, he’s 17, we’ve left a lot of that up to the family,” Kelly said. “I’ve been there to see him on multiple occasions. Progress is real. He’s back in Jacksonville and reports in talking with his dad were really positive. This is another scenario where there’s a recovery process for him, but i think everyone is optimistic.”

The car crash happened on LSU’s campus on Jan. 16 and Hurley was hospitalized immediately. Here is the report:

“The single-vehicle crash occurred around 2:47 a.m. at Highland Road and South Quad Drive. Officers found a 2021 Dodge Charger driven by Hurley had veered off the road and struck a tree. The crash report stated the airbags deployed, and Hurley, who was wearing a seatbelt, was found unconscious with a large laceration on his face.

Emergency responders extricated Hurley from the vehicle, and he was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Health for treatment. LSU Police contacted his father due to Hurley’s status as a minor.”

Hurley is from Jacksonville, so he remains back home recovering, but it is unclear how long he will be away from LSU and the team.

“Again, it’s a day to day situation in talking to his dad Charlie, there’s really good progress,” Kelly said. “We all come from a similar perspective. We’re all hoping for the best but don’t have any certain timetable as to when he might be back.”

Hurley is one of three scholarship quarterbacks on LSU’s roster with senior Garrett Nussmeier and sophomore transfer Michael Van Buren. Hurley, still one of the youngest players on the team, redshirtted his first year, but has the arm talent to compete for the backup job this season. At the moment, football takes a backseat, as Hurley looks to make a full recovery in the coming months.

“Colin was healthy when we were going through the portal and we’re hoping he can join us later, but Michael is a young man that has SEC experience and we wanted to supplement that in our room,” Kelly said. “If you’re going to upgrade the roster in the way we did, at some time, the No. 2 [quarterback] may have to be called upon and if he does, we have Colin and Michael who can continue to compete for a championship.”
