The New Orleans Saints’ first roster move under newly hired coach Kellen Moore hits particularly close to home for LSU fans.

Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire signed a one-year contract to remain with his home-state franchise Thursday, general manager Mickey Loomis and the organization announced.

The Saints now have six running backs under contract for the 2025 season, led by star Alvin Kamara, fellow veteran Jamaal Williams and third-year player Kendre Miller.

New Orleans initially signed Edwards-Helaire to its practice squad Dec. 18, two days after he was released by the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 5-foot-7, 207-pound athlete was elevated to the active roster for the final two games of the season and rushed 13 times for 46 yards and caught three passes for 24 yards.

Edwards-Helaire has played 50 career regular season games, including 32 starts, and carried 454 times for 1,891 yards and 12 touchdowns and caught 92 passes for 789 yards and seven scores.

He has also played in eight playoff games, including two starts, and 39 times for 220 yards and a touchdown and caught nine passes for another 43 yards.

The Chiefs drafted the former Catholic (Baton Rouge) state champion and LSU national champion in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft at No. 32 overall, and he was a part of Super Bowl championship teams the final two years of his tenure there.

Edwards-Helaire started the bulk of his rookie season, 13 games in the regular season and two in the playoffs, and finished with 196 carries for 874 yards and five touchdowns and 39 catches for 320 yards and a touchdown overall.

All three rushing numbers, and the receptions and receiving yardage have all remained career-high marks as he missed more time with injuries in 2021 and 2022 and ultimately lost ground on the depth chart to Isiah Pacheco.

Kansas City declined its fifth-year option on his contract, but re-signed him last spring.

The Chiefs placed him on the Reserve/Non-Football Illness list prior to the season and eventually released him Dec. 16 before he had played a game this season.
