Trips between LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and his father, longtime coach Doug Nussmeier, appear on the verge of becoming much more convenient.
The New Orleans Saints are working to finalize a deal to add Doug as quarterbacks coach of the organization’s new-look staff, Josina Anderson of Bovada Sports reported Tuesday.
The newly minted Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia Eagles would return to the franchise that drafted him as a player more than 30 years ago.
Nussmeier has coached quarterbacks alongside offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, the Saints’ new head coach, at each of their three previous stops, including five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, one with the Los Angeles Chargers and the most recent in Philadelphia.
The Saints announced Moore, himself a former NFL quarterback, last week — less than 40 hours after the Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 40-22, in Super Bowl LIX in the Caesars Superdome.

Nussmeier was quickly identified as a likely candidate for the first-time head coach’s staff.
The fourth-round selection out of Idaho in the 1994 NFL Draft spent the first four seasons of his six-year NFL career in New Orleans before stints with the Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears and a seventh professional season with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League in 2000.
He has coached since then, with experience in both professional leagues and at the college level.
Garrett Nussmeier announced in December he would return in 2025 for a second season as LSU’s starting quarterback.
Doug’s younger son, Colton Nussmeier, is among the nation’s top 2027 prospects at the position and one of the first few in the class being prioritized by LSU in the recruiting process.
Garrett, Colton and the entire Nussmeier family were on hand in New Orleans this month to celebrate the Super Bowl victory.
