LSU’s defensive line haul is an impressive one, and the class continues to see positive movement on the rankings front as the future Tigers wrap up their senior seasons.

On Monday, the updated On3 Top 300 was released for the 2023 class.

One of the big risers was LSU edge commitment Dylan Carpenter, who flipped his commitment from University of Louisiana to the Tigers after grabbing an offer as a senior.

Thanks to a strong final year at St. Amant, Carpenter not only moved from a three-star prospect to a four-star, but he’s made his debut inside the On3 Top 300.

“When Dylan Carpenter popped up on our radar earlier in the fall, we thought he probably at the minimum a high three-star,” On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power said. “Just when you get all the information about his measurables and athletic background, I think he was region player of the year in basketball, and watching him as a senior, we thought he was a four-star and deserving of a 90 rating.”

At 6-foot-4, 245 pounds, Carpenter now checks in as the No. 33 edge defender in the country. He’s ranked as the No. 290 prospect in the 2023 class and No. 13 recruit in Louisiana.

“With Carpenter, he is very physical and a strong run defender,” Power said. “He will continue to progress as a pass rusher. He is kind of an athlete out there at this point, but the physicality and athleticism pops off the video. He’s very active. I think when you look at his frame and ability to continue adding weight, alongside with his coordination as a basketball player, he’s a guy that with coaching and continued focus will be able to add a pass-rushing skillset. Given what he has shown as a senior and all the information we’ve gathered, we thought he was deserving of a four-star bump.”

Carpenter joins a defensive line haul that also includes recently minted five-star Dashawn Womack, Top 50 defensive lineman Darron Reed, and a pair of other four-stars in Joshua Mickens and Jaxon Howard.

LSU’s 2023 class, which maintained a Top 5 ranking on both On3 and the On3 Consensus Football Team Rankings, has 25 verbal commitments, though head coach Brian Kelly and Co. will look to add more names to the list between the Early Signing Period in December and National Signing Day in February.
