Hosts Lee Corso, at left, and Kirk Herbstreit talk during the ESPN College GameDay show on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, on the Hesburgh Library lawn on the University of Notre Dame campus in South Bend. The show was to highlight the Notre Dame-Ohio State game.

LSU and Texas A&M will battle at 6:30 p.m. Saturday for the lead in the SEC standings.

And ESPN’s “College GameDay” crew — like much of the country on the 1.5-point spread — was split this week on whether the No. 8 Tigers (6-1, 3-0) and No. 14 Aggies (6-1, 4-0) would come out on top.

Four of the eight analysts and personalities on show’s podcast Thursday and television broadcast Saturday went with coach Brian Kelly and road LSU to win in College Station, Texas.

Desmond Howard, Nick Saban and Pat McAfee all picked the Tigers on Saturday morning, with host Rece Davis having done so on the podcast as well.

“I think I’m gonna have to go with the visiting team,” said Howard, the former Heisman winner and Super Bowl champion for Michigan and the Green Bay Packers. “I think the Bayou Bengals will win a close game.”

Added Saban, the former LSU and Alabama coach: “I think LSU just has got momentum. I think both coaches have done a great job improving their team, but I think LSU has got the momentum right now.”

McAfee continued the momentum on the show.

“I don’t think Texas A&M’s offense is just like a college offense yet,” the former West Virginia and Indianapolis Colts punter said. “I think Elko will figure it out. But I think (Garrett) Nussmeier and the boys — Geaux Tigers — get a big-time win down there in College Station.”

This week’s celebrity guest-picker, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber, went with the home team to win in front of a big crowd.

And Lee Corso also chose the Aggies and cited the home team having won the past seven meetings in the series.

Kirk Herbstreit, the former Ohio State quarterback, abstained as he will provide commentary for the game’s broadcast later in the day.

Davis, ESPN insider Pete Thamel and gambling expert “Stanford Steve” Couglin shared their picks this week on the ESPN College GameDay podcast as well.

Davis shared the lone LSU pick there, while Coughlin and Thamel both leaned to Texas A&M.”(Indiana coach Curt) Cignetti is undoubtedly the Coach of the Year, but my Coach of the Year is Mike Elko,” Coughlin said, citing the growth in the Aggies from its practices prior to their opener against Notre Dame to where they are now in late October.

Thamel echoed Couglin’s pick, including both referencing the team’s disruptive defensive line.

“I think this game is going to be a bit of a slog,” Thamel said on the episode. “And I think A&M finds a way to win at home at night.”
