Everything Kim Mulkey said after LSU's loss to Auburn
LSU lost to Auburn 67-62 on Sunday evening. Here’s what Kim Mulkey said after her team’s loss to Auburn on the road on Sunday.
What went wrong…
“Defense. Also, we knew Auburn would get in passing lanes and make it difficult just to make a pass. We didn’t handle that very well. Energy, enthusiasm, they just came at us. That was from the beginning of the game. It was good that we fought back and took the lead.”
What Auburn did defensively…
“Their effort was better than our effort. Their defensive energy and lateral movement and aggression was good. That’s the kind of coach she is. They got after us. Anything we tried to do, they made it hard. The only way you’re going to execute against a team that plays like that is you have to set screens and get open. You have to make sharp and crisp passes. Everything we did was hard.”
On only two 3-point attempts…
“You couldn’t get any looks. We were standing there asking for the ball, but you have to set screens, stack, and do things, but they weren’t giving us those looks. We missed a lot of layups and missed nine free throws and we lost by five. Make your layups, make your free throws and it might have been a different game.”

On getting the ball in the post…
“Your posts are only going to be open for about two seconds and when they’re there you have to be ready to deliver it. Their defensive pressure on the wing stopped us sometimes from getting it in at the right time. I didn’t think we had any ball reversals today. All we did was make a pass, set a screen, take a shot, we didn’t have any continuity, ball reversals, we didn’t turn the ball over a ton, but their defense was disrupting everything we did.”
On the isolation late from Angel…
“Well I wasn’t getting anything out of every other thing we tried doing for 38 minutes and 50 seconds and she’s a returning all-american and I though let’s just do a 1-4 flat. Confidence, trust, I let Angel bring the ball up and thought we were struggling trying to make a pass to the wing and wing to her, so what the heck, just do a 1-4 flat and let’s see. I talked about that with the team afterwards too. I should never have to do things like that. I should be able to do what we normally do, but in the course of trying to win a game sometimes you think outside the box. We didn’t get two defensive rebounds on the other end.”
On the defensive glass…
“We have to get better on the defensive end and part of that is defensive rebounding and that bit us today.”
