As the NFL season nears its halfway point, two former LSU Tigers are making waves at the top of the league’s receiving leaderboards. Wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson, who once shared the field in Baton Rouge, now find themselves locked in a competitive race for the top spot among NFL receivers.

Through eight games, Chase has racked up 674 receiving yards for the Cincinnati Bengals. Known for his ability to stretch the field and make contested catches, Chase has quickly reasserted himself as one of the league’s elite receivers, helping Cincinnati along the way. He and the Bengals could not come to an agreement in the offseason regarding a contract extension, so the former Rummel Raider is still on his rookie deal that runs through 2025. When the time comes, Chase’s next deal will likely make him the highest paid receiver in the league. Chase’s chemistry with former LSU and current Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has been evident, with the two consistently connecting for big plays downfield, further solidifying his role as the team’s offensive focal point. With that being said, the Bengals have struggled overall this season with a 3-5 record and are 3rd in the AFC North behind the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens.

Hot on Chase’s heels is Jefferson, a star for the Minnesota Vikings. He has already amassed 646 receiving yards this season. Known for his sharp route-running and his acrobatic catches, Jefferson has been a constant threat in Minnesota’s attack even with new quarterback Sam Darnold. Jefferson continues to prove each week why he’s the top paid non-QB in the league.

Chase and Jefferson currently lead a talented group of NFL receivers, with Ceedee Lamb of the Dallas Cowboys, Terry McLaurin of the Washington Commanders, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Chris Godwin rounding out the top five. Godwin will drop off in the coming weeks as he dislocated his ankle in Week 7 but could potentially return in time for the playoffs.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that former LSU wideout Brian Thomas Jr. currently sits at No. 6 in receiving yards with 573, although, he’s a little banged up and could miss some time. Thomas is day to day right now for the Jacksonville Jaguars. And of course there’s Malik Nabers, who has racked up 498 receiving yards with the New York Giants.

LSU’s reputation as “Wide Receiver U” continues to grow with each season, as former Tigers light up the NFL on Sundays and current standouts like Kyren Lacy make their case on Saturdays.
