Jeremiah Hughes breaks down his commitment to LSU, goals at DBU
2023 Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman defensive back Jeremiah Hughes committed to LSU on Thursday, his mom and dad’s anniversary. For the 6-0, 165-pound athlete, the prestige of DBU stood out to him as well as life after football.
“It was just the fact that it’s DBU,” Hughes told The Bengal Tiger. “I feel like that’s the best place for me to be able to get to where I want. Be able to go the league, meet new people, connect with people and LSU is just a community. It’s farther than football, it’s what I can do after. Everyone that I’ve seen go to Baton Rouge has been successful even after football. That’s just what I want.”
Relationships with the coaching staff played a big role too. Graduate assistant Nicco Fertitta has long-standing ties to him and cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples has a plan in place for him.
“It was pretty important,” Hughes said. “They made it a priority to build a relationship with me to make me comfortable to make me feel like that was home. That was the biggest part to me is just making me comfortable so that I can stay here for the next four years.
“Coach Steeples is very detailed. He was telling me everything that he had planned. It was amazing to see that I could be such a priority at a big time school.”

Jeremiah Hughes sees success ahead for LSU
Playing in the SEC is a part of the plan to help Hughes get to the next level.
“It’s just competitive. I’m used to it,” he said. “I like competing. It’s just what I do. Playing in the SEC and having my family be able to see me compete at the highest level and see me in my comfort zone.”
For Jeremiah Hughes, Brian Kelly has LSU on a trajectory that will be bright. It’s an all-encompassing decision as to why he picked LSU.
“Success,” Hughes said of what he sees in Brian Kelly’s program. “The way we’re going, it looks like nothing but success. The future we have is bright. The plan, players, coaches and community is amazing. The community helps the football portion of it a lot and that’s what we’re building. It’s amazing to see because not everybody really has that.”
With his commitment behind him, he’s focused on leading Bishop Gorman to a National Championship.
“Great senior season and of course for my team, we’re pushing for a National Championship right now. We have a national schedule that’s just really the goal for us right now. We’ve been in the lab, focused. Anything my team needs me to do, I’ve been on it. My confidence, length and I’m a go-getter regardless.”
