Ole Miss star receiver Tre Harris left Saturday’s game against South Carolina with an apparent ankle injury and did not return to action. Despite only getting three catches for 81 yards before leaving the game, Harris remains the FBS leader in receiving yards with 885, 173 yards more than the next most.

Harris’ 55 catches for 885 yards and five touchdowns place him amongst the best receivers in the country through the first half of the season, but his status for LSU is uncertain right now and Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin talked about his injury situation.

“We don’t really get into much detail on that. He didn’t finish the first half and wasn’t close to going back in the second half. He certainly wouldn’t be playing today, so we have to get the other guys ready and we have to perform better than we did in the second half when we scored three points – now, we only threw one pass in the fourth quarter. That makes us move people in different spots when he’s out, so we’re preparing to do that and preparing to play without him.”

Antwane “Juice” Wells and Jordan Watkins are the next two playmakers to watch for if Harris is not available. On Saturday, the two combined for eight catches for 169 yards with longs of 66 and 41 yards against a stout Gamecock defense.

LSU’s secondary is a question mark, but as a whole, the Tigers’ defense has made strides forward. New defensive coordinator Blake Baker understands what it takes to contain SEC offenses, but going against Kiffin posses the toughest challenge yet for the LSU defense.

Ole Miss stumbled two weeks ago against Kentucky at home, but after a resounding win over South Carolina on the road without Harris, the Rebels are back in the top 10 and looking for a statement win to cement themselves in the playoff picture. The home team has won the last four games in this series and Kiffin understands the challenge ahead for his team.

“It’s a big week for us preparing to play a talented and well coached team in a challenging place to play,” Kiffin said. “Our guys are excited for the challenge coming off of last week’s road game. We got a lot of work to do and a lot of things to improve on, especially offensively. Felt good about two of the three phases on Saturday and our goal is to play a complete game this week.”

Kiffin hammered home the point that the offense needs to be more efficient in key areas of the game in order to create separation in situations like they had on Saturday, but overall the Rebels have one of the more balanced teams in the country through six weeks.
