Louisiana native Jardin Gilbert leaves Texas A&M, entering transfer portal
Texas A&M defensive back Jardin Gilbert plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett on Monday. The 6-1, 200-pound defensive back has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
He played high school football on LSU’s campus at Baton Rouge (La.) University Lab, where he was a four-star safety recruit. The Tigers are looking for safety help and Gilbert would be someone who could fit right in for the secondary.
Gilbert was the No. 212 overall prospect and No. 13 safety in the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Gilbert’s junior season in 2023 was cut short just two games in due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. In those two games, he made five tackles, a half-tackle for loss and a pass breakup. He played in 23 games across his first two seasons with the Aggies and made 10 starts as a sophomore in 2022. He finished that season with 61 tackles, six pass breakups and two interceptions.

Jardin Gilbert another name to enter Transfer Portal
The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public. The portal opened on Dec. 4 and runs for 30 days.
The portal has been around since Oct. 15, 2018 and the new calendar cycle within the portal begins each August. For example, the 2021-22 cycle started Aug. 1. During the 2020-21 cycle, 2,626 FBS football players entered the transfer portal (including walk-ons). That comes after 1,681 entered during the 2019-20 cycle and 1,709 during the abbreviated 2018-19 cycle.
In comparison, 1,833 Division I basketball players entered the portal during the 2020-21 cycle after totals of 1,020 in 2019-20 and 1,063 in 2018-19.
