LSU has its fourth portal addition of the week as Max Mackinnon announced his decision to join the Tigers and Matt McMahon for the 2025 season on Thursday night on social media.

Mackinnon is a 6-foot-6 guard from Australia that spent two years at Elon then the past season as Portland’s leading scorer. In 28 minutes per game, Mackinnon averaged 14.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists on 46.7 percent shooting from the field, 40.7 percent form 3-point range and 88.7 from the free throw line. He was selected to the Second-Team All-WCC this season.

Mackinnon adds another scoring option to the Tigers backcourt, joining newly added Dedan Thomas and Rashad King who committed this week as well. LSU has been perhaps the most active team in the SEC to this point in the transfer portal, wasting no time in hosting and adding players from across the country.

Things are moving quickly for LSU as the staff hopes to fill out their roster in the coming weeks. Coming off of a disappointing season, there was an urgency to reload in the incredibly challenging SEC and LSU is doing just that.

The financial backing for McMahon has made a massive difference this offseason, firmly making the Tigers players in several transfer portal recruitments and we’ve already seen that pay dividends. LSU has been linked to other players as well that we’ve talked about throughout the past week on The Bengal Tiger.

Here’s everything to know on Dedan Thomas’ commitment to LSU.

Here’s everything to know on Mike Nwoko’s commitment to LSU.

Here’s everythign to know on Rashad King’s commitment to LSU.

Transfer portal background information

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such asynchronous contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.scholarship anymore.
