LSU assistant Brian Polian moving into a new role
After one season in Baton Rouge, LSU head coach Brian Kelly is shaking up his staff.
LSU special teams coordinator Brian Polian will move into an off-field role as he assists Kelly with roster management, transfer portal, NIL and more, sources confirmed with The Bengal Tiger staff. The news was first reported by Pete Thamel.
LSU now has an open spot among the 10 allotted on-field coaches, which Kelly will fill by bringing in a new hire as special teams coach. As of Tuesday morning, the school had not confirmed who would replace Polian as special teams coach.
The Tigers struggled on special teams during the 2022 season, which likely played a role in the decision by Kelly to transition Polian into a roster and program management role.
Polian had worked with Kelly as special teams coordinator at Notre Dame from 2017-2021, and he was brought to Baton Rouge to run special teams for Kelly for a sixth straight season. Polian also helped manage the transfer portal and oversaw recruiting as the program’s recruiting coordinator.

With Polian taking on more responsibilities in an off-field role, sources tell the Bengal Tiger staff that LSU running backs coach Frank Wilson will take on a bigger role in high school recruiting. Wilson, a New Orleans native, has previously served as LSU’s recruiting coordinator.
LSU’s on-field staff still includes Wilson, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan, wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton, offensive line coach Brad Davis, defensive coordinator Matt House, cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples, safeties coach Kerry Cooks and defensive line coach Jamar Cain. Denbrock is also tasked with coaching tight ends, while House oversees the linebackers.
