The Tigers may be in Omaha preparing for the College World Series, but it’s never too early to begin preparing for next season. On Thursday morning, LSU landed its first transfer addition for the 2024 season in South Carolina infielder Michael Braswell.

Braswell was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team in 2022 and followed that up with a quality sophomore campaign as a starter on a top-15 team in the country with the Gamecocks. He ended the season starting 37 games while playing in 51 and registering a .355 batting average, .353 slugging percentage, and a .372 on base percentage. Additionally, Braswell had one home run and five doubles in 153 plate appearances while also walking 28 times.

He also has some experience on the mound as he showed in high school and as a freshman, but he did not pitch in his sophomore season.

Out of high school, Braswell was the No. 2 shortstop and No. 5 overall player in the state of Georgia by Perfect Game in the class of 2021 and was ranked as the No. 90 prospect in the 2021 MLB Draft by Baseball America.

Building the future

The Tigers are losing several pieces from this year’s lineup, including Tre Morgan, Jordan Thompson, Gavin Dugas, and Dylan Crews. Head coach Jay Johnson has all of his attention on winning in Omaha, but this is only the start of his tenure at LSU. Now, he looks to build a dynasty with the resources available to him and the competition in the SEC.

During the super regional round, Jay Johnson was interviewed mid-game on ESPN. With the Tigers in control and Alex Box stadium rocking, it was the perfect time for Johnson to make yet another recruiting pitch to the country.

“I hope every good player in the transfer portal is watching this right now,” he said on the ESPN broadcast, “because this doesn’t exist anywhere else.”

It’s true, LSU has something special right now and looks to capitalize that over the next two weeks. Johnson has never been shy about stating he wants to get the best players to come to LSU and win, but now as he makes a long run into the postseason, it could pay off in the portal over the coming months.
