LSU cornerback Laterrance Welch is entering the transfer portal, he announced on Friday evening on social media. He has two years of eligibility remaining after playing on special teams and sporadically on the Tigers’ defense in his first two years on campus.

“I would like to thank all of the LSU coaches for the opportunity to be a part of this great institution and football program,” Welch said. “I would especially like to thank my teammates for everything and always having my back. It was a great ride! With that being said, and after careful consideration, lots of prayer, and long conversations with my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility remaining. Thank you LSU.”

Welch was in the cornerback rotation this year as the unit went through several different combinations, searching for improvement, but ultimately, Welch was unable to secure a starting spot. Out of Acadiana High School in Lafayette, Louisiana, Welch was a four-star cornerback in the 2022 class, the No. 168 player in the country according to the On3 Industry Rankings and the No. 21 cornerback in the country before committing to LSU in head coach Brian Kelly’s first class just after he was hired at LSU.

Welch is the second player to announce their entry into the portal, following running back Armoni Goodwin who announced earlier this week.

Transfer portal background information

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The portal has been around since Oct. 15, 2018 and the new calendar cycle within the portal begins each August. For example, the 2021-22 cycle started Aug. 1. During the 2020-21 cycle, 2,626 FBS football players entered the transfer portal (including walk-ons). That comes after 1,681 entered during the 2019-20 cycle and 1,709 during the abbreviated 2018-19 cycle.

In comparison, 1,833 Division I basketball players entered the portal during the 2020-21 cycle after totals of 1,020 in 2019-20 and 1,063 in 2018-19.
