For nearly 25 years, Evangel star quarterback Brock Berlin held the Louisiana record for most total yards during a high school career.

During his time at Evangel, Berlin put up 13,659 total yards on offense.

This past weekend, the record fell.

The new name atop the list: LSU commitment Ju’Juan Johnson, who led Lafayette Christian Academy to another playoff win while passing up Berlin’s record.

Now, with LCA’s run for a state title still ongoing, Johnson has 13,662 total yards across his high school career.

Brock Berlin’s 24-year old record falls

Johnson entered the year with 2,211 career rushing yards and 29 touchdowns while passing for 7,134 yards and 76 touchdowns.

Berlin’s record was within reach, and Johnson remained the course through 10 games – then needing just two playoff games to take over the No. 1 spot.

On the season, Johnson has passed for 3,058 yards and 38 touchdowns while rushing for 1,240 yards and 21 touchdowns.

After 12 games as a senior, Johnson has now totaled 10,192 passing yards and 114 touchdowns and 3,451 yards rushing and 50 touchdowns.

In total, he’s now amassed 13,662 yards during his time at LCA, which puts him No. 1 in LHSAA history after passing up Berlin’s mark of 13,659 career yards.

The chase for another LHSAA record – with LSU ties

LCA faces off against Teurlings Catholic this weekend, and a win would get Johnson and the Knights back into the state title game on December 9 in the Caesars Superdome.

Berlin’s record has been on Johnson’s radar for some time.

Now, another LHSAA record is within reach

Johnson now has 164 career touchdowns during his time at LCA, which puts him on the brink of taking over the No. 1 spot for most career touchdowns in Louisiana high school history.

Former LSU great and University High standout Nick Brossette, who piled up 167 total touchdowns during his time in high school, holds the LHSAA record for both career touchdowns (167), career rushing touchdowns (154) and career rushing yards (8,708).

Now, Johnson needs three touchdowns to tie the record and four to break the record.

LCA matches up with Teurlings Catholic this weekend, and a win would propel LCA back to the state title game against the winner of St. Thomas More and Archbishop Shaw.

Johnson was a key part of LCA’s 2020 state championship squad and has helped guide the Knights to back-to-back state title games the past two seasons.

In 2022’s state title game, Johnson’s single-game performance totaling 585 total yards of offense along with five touchdowns was a state championship game record.

Fast forward 12 months, Johnson is a win away from getting LCA back to the Superdome – and with a chance to finish out his high school career with another state championship while taking over the No. 1 spot in both career yards and career touchdowns by any player in Louisiana history.
