LSU safety Matthew Langlois is stepping away from football after battling multiple injuries over the past two seasons, he tells The Bengal Tiger staff.

Langlois signed with LSU in the 2021 class after a standout career at Catholic of Pointe Coupee, leaving high school ranked by On3 as a Top 5 safety nationally and Top 5 prospect in the Bayou State.

After appearing in nine games as a true freshman in 2021, Langlois suffered a season-ending injury following the home opener vs. Southern in 2022. In 2023, Langlois missed the entire season as he battled injury. Langlois was also absent from spring practices as he rehabbed from injury.

“I’ve been dealing with an ACL injury since the Southern game, which ultimately led to me medically retiring,” Langlois told The Bengal Tiger staff. “I stayed at LSU because I wanted to play for LSU, which I was very close to becoming the player I wanted to be.

“God had other plans and although I would have loved to play for LSU, my body just can’t now. I’ve been rehabbing for the past 22-24 months and I’m finally taking a break from the pain and constant grind to come back and be the player I thought I could be.”

While Langlois is no longer able to continue his collegiate career, the Louisiana native made a big splash as a top prospect before signing with the Tigers.

The former state champion sprinter swept the Louisiana Class 1A state title in the 100-meter (10.79) and 200-meter (22.33) races in May 2021.

As a senior in 2020, Langlois logged 24 total touchdowns, rushing for 1,035 yards on offense, registering 75 tackles on defense and totaling more than 400 yards in the return game.

Langlois also led his team to an appearance in the Louisiana Division IV state title game in 2019, finishing the year with 1,343 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns to go with 68 tackles, 12 passes break ups and four sacks.

With Langlois no longer on roster, LSU’s safety room includes transfers Jardin Gilbert and Austin Ausberry, returning starters Major Burns and Sage Ryan, second-year defensive back Kylin Jackson, third-year defensive back Jordan Allen, early-enrollees Dashawn Spears and Joel Rogers, and 2024 high school signees Wallace Foster and Ju’Juan Johnson.

During spring practices, the majority of first-team safety reps went to Gilbert and Ryan, while Burns took the first-team reps at the STAR position – a hybrid safety who plays closer to the line of scrimmage.
