The LSU baseball team fell from the No. 1 spot in the college baseball rankings for the first time this season.

After debuting as the No. 1 team in America, it took until May 8 for LSU to fall from the spot.

On Monday, Wake Forest (39-7 overall) jumped LSU (37-10) for the No. 1 spot in the Coaches Poll, D1 Baseball and Baseball America rankings.

LSU loses first SEC series of the season

The drop came after LSU suffered the program’s first SEC series loss this season. The Tigers took Game 1 on Friday, but fell at Auburn in Games 2 and 3.

Auburn won the series after using a six-run first inning to secure a 12-2 win over LSU on Sunday.

“We walked six guys in the first inning, and that’s a tough hole to climb out of,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “So we start there, and then Herberholz did a nice job for them on the mound; he executed his pitches.

“I never feel like we’re out of a game, but that first inning makes it a little more difficult. Our pitchers don’t have to be perfect, they just need to be solid, and we weren’t solid today.”

Skenes named SEC Pitcher of the Week

LSU junior right-hander Paul Skenes was named Monday the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week by the league office.

Skenes, a product of Lake Forest, Calif., defeated Auburn on Friday night, working a season-high 7.1 innings and allowing no runs on six hits with one walk and a career-high 15 strikeouts.

He became the first LSU pitcher to record 15 strikeouts in a game since Tyler Jones fanned 15 at the University of New Orleans on May 17, 2011.

Skenes’ outing marked the most strikeouts by an LSU pitcher in an SEC game since April 24, 2009, when Anthony Ranaudo fanned 15 against Auburn in Baton Rouge.

Skenes improved to 9-1 on the year, and he leads the nation with 139 strikeouts. He is also No. 1 in the SEC in ERA (1.73), innings pitched (72.2) and opponent batting average (.165).
