LSU head coach Matt McMahon sent a press release on Wednesday night, updating the injury status of junior forward Jalen Reed after Reed left the game against Florida State on Tuesday night with a knee injury. Here is what McMahon said.

“Jalen Reed suffered a torn (right) ACL in last night’s game and will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season. We are devastated for Jalen as he has worked extremely hard in preparation for his junior year. He is an absolute joy to coach and earned the role of captain from his teammates. We look forward to Jalen making a full recovery and continuing his successful basketball career.”

McMahon raved about Reed’s progress early in the season as his junior forward had been a staple for LSU’s success early on. The Tigers are 7-1 on the year with three wins over high-major opponents. SEC play begins Jan. 4 against Vanderbilt at home.

Matt McMahon quotes on Jalen Reed this year…

Matt McMahon before the Florida State game on Jalen Reed’s season…

“Hopefully more of the same. Having the ability to score down in the post. For him, h’es seeing some double teams now so making the right decisions when those come is important, then he’s going to continue to extend his range, he shot 39 percent from behind the arc a year ago and that will improve. When you look at the UCF game, he had 21 points and 13 rebounds with four assists when they came to double him. The rebounding has been the biggest step he’s made this year and we want that to continue to be an emphasis this year.”

Matt McMahon before LSU’s 2024-25 season on Jalen Reed…

“Incredibly important. I believe in him. I love him. He’s about the right things. He’s really why you get into coaching. Very smart. It means something to him. He really cares. So he works extremely hard to try and become the best player he can be.

I think he’s really matured this off-season as he enters year three. I mentioned in my opening, he’s gained 15 pounds of muscle, but I think he’s moving better than he ever has before.

I think he’s a guy that we’ll depend on heavily, not only for his ability to score off the bounce, but I think he’s a unique player at 6’10”, 250, that can create offense for his teammates. He knows he has to lower his turnover rate. It was way too high a year ago.

Then I also mentioned his three-point shooting. He really was not a threat his freshman year. Last year as a sophomore, 39 percent, shot it really well. I want to see him increase that three-point volume. Doesn’t need to take 10 or 12 a game, but we’d like to see him shoot it more because he’s really worked hard to develop into a good three-point shooter.”

Matt McMahon on constructing LSU’s roster entering the year…

“Well, I think, not to overcomplicate it, but really you have three different areas as you’re constructing your roster now in today’s game. It starts with the player retention, the first bucket. Second bucket is the portal, and then third, the high school route.

We really love the player development piece, so I love being able to bring players in and have them in the program multiple years. That’s why I talked about Jalen Reed when we first got started. I just love his growth and development. I think our new strength coach, Mike Chatman, has done a tremendous job with him. He’s now 250 pounds. He’s moving better than he ever has before, and I expect him to take another big jump.”
