LSU lands elite UNLV point guard from transfer portal

LSU picked up its second transfer portal commitment of the offseason on Monday as UNLV transfer point guard Dedan Thomas is coming to the Bayou, On3’s Joe Tipton first reported.
Thomas is a 6-foot-1 point guard who still has two years of eligibility remaining after averaging 15.6 points and 4.7 assists per game his sophomore year with the Runnin Rebels, both team highs. Thomas chose the Tigers and Matt McMahon over Kentucky, Florida, and Syracuse according to reports, making this a significant addition to LSU’s roster for next season.
According to sources, Thomas had a silent visit to LSU last week and now makes it official. Thomas was added the same day as Mississippi State transfer Mike Nwoko, a 6-foot-10 forward, and the two are the first transfer additions of the offseason for LSU.
Both were top priorities for the LSU with plenty of more targets on the board. We previewed their potential targets over the weekend for our subscribers.
Transfer portal background information
The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.
The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.
Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored.
