Jay Johnson has once again reeled in a major transfer portal addition to his roster with Luke Holman, a right handed pitcher from Alabama. The 6-foot-4 junior out of Pennsylvania was Alabama’s Friday-night starter for most of the season and posted a team-best 3.67 ERA in 81 innings pitched with 15 starts.

It’s yet another massive transfer to Baton Rouge for Johnson’s program, something that has become a trend over the past two offseasons. Holman took visits to Tennessee, Mississippi State, and LSU before committing to Johnson and the reigning champs. Holman entered the portal after the coaching change at Alabama, but now stays in the SEC, looking to help the Tigers win another championship. The Bengal Tiger was the first to report his intention to visit with LSU earlier this month and now, the former Alabama starter eyes a starting spot with Johnson in 2024.

With 87 strikeouts to 31 walks, Holman comes to LSU with aspirations of being a highly touted prospect, while sharpening his skillset similar to Paul Skenes and Ty Floyd. The Tigers now have three transfer portal additions with Holman, LHP Justin Loer and LHP Gage Jump. That, paired with the return of Javen Coleman, Thatcher Hurd, and Nate Ackenhausen helps propel this staff into contention when looking ahead to 2024.

Johnson has made it abundantly clear that he looks to utilize the portal to not only fill holes, but turn question marks into strengths. Winning his first championship just over a month ago, Johnson wasted no time looking towards 2024, now with six transfers and and several impactful freshmen who did not go to the MLB.

While the 2024 season is still several months away, it’s easy to think about what’s to come with this program with Johnson at the helm as he hopes to permanently stamp LSU as the best program in college baseball.
