LSU makes a splash with No. 2 QB in the country
LSU Football hosted two of the top five quarterbacks in the country for this past weekend’s 38-0 win over New Mexico in Tiger Stadium.
California’s Julian Sayin and the Lone Star State’s DJ Lagway both made the trip into Baton Rouge for an unofficial visit on Saturday. Sayin is ranked by the On3 Consensus as the No. 2 quarterback prospect in the 2024 class, while Lagway is ranked as the No. 5 quarterback in the class.
After his second visit to Baton Rouge since June, Sayin is now moving through his junior season with tentative plans to announce a college commitment in October.
Sayin’s LSU visit comes at the right time for the Tigers
With a potential decision coming next month, Sayin is eyeing some final college visits before making the call. LSU, Alabama and Georgia have all been mentioned by the Top 100 prospect as hopeful trips on the schedule, and the Tigers were checked off the list this past weekend.
Sayin flew in from California with his family and quarterbacks coach, and despite being on campus for just 24 hours, the nation’s No. 2 quarterback prospect got the red-carpet treatment from the staff.
“It was awesome,” Sayin said. “I talked to some of the players, (had my) photoshoot, met with Coach Kelly pregame, and toured and had meetings (on Sunday).
“The atmosphere was awesome even though it wasn’t an SEC matchup. I had a great time talking with the staff. I loved seeing the tailgating and everything about the game day environment.”
LSU’s pitch to Sayin has remained consistent
Since extending Sayin a verbal scholarship offer, he’s been one of a small group of quarterbacks in the 2024 class that the Tigers have both been in constant contact with and had to campus for multiple visits.
While on campus Sunday, Sayin sat down with LSU quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock for a deeper dive into how the Tigers plan to use him within the offense if he chooses to get on board in the 2024 class.

(They were) talking about their scheme and how I would fit. We went over their protection and plays and stuff like that,” Sayin said. “I really liked meeting with Coach Sloan and Coach Denbrock. Coach Sloan thinks I will fit well being a decision maker and getting the ball in the playmakers hands.
“I really like Coach Sloan, we’ve built a really good relationship over the past months,” added Sayin. “I have a really good connection with him, and Coach Kelly, I’m close with him. He recruited me at Notre Dame. And, I really like Coach Denbrock. I’m starting to build a relationship with him.”
If a decision is near, LSU could be trending
As the dust settles from his unofficial visit to Baton Rouge, Sayin will now turn his focus to any visits he hopes to make before making a college decision.
Georgia and Alabama are two other Southeastern Conference programs he’s had an eye on, but no dates have been locked in yet.
“I’m still thinking this fall,” Sayin told On3 National Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons. “I took this (LSU) visit trying to see things and look things over, and then I’ll definitely talk to my coaches and my parents.”
When it comes to the impact made by LSU’s game day visit, Sayin said the Tigers have positioned themselves well as his recruitment winds down.
“LSU definitely sits very high with me,” he said.
