LSU Garrett Nussmeier named SEC Offensive Player of the Week
LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week after passing for 337 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions on 22-of-51 passing in LSU’s win over Ole Miss in Tiger Stadium.
After some trouble throughout the second half, Nussmeier locked in and delivered an incredible final drive to tie the game with a touchdown pass to Aaron Anderson in the final 30 seconds to send the game to overtime. Once in the extra period, Nussmeier found Kyren Lacy on a back shoulder throw for the touchdown to win the game.
“We executed well with a two minute drive to stay in the game. The offensive line did a good job of giving me time and the receivers made plays and that’s when good things happen. That [last play] was crazy. I had one of the worst games of my career tonight, but the best part about that is I can learn from it and we got a win. I’m excited to get in the film room and fix my mistakes and hopefully it will be a huge growth moment for me to take my game to the next level.”
Nussmeier now has 1,989 yards and 18 touchdowns with six interceptions this year while completing 64.9 percent of his passes. As one of the top quarterbacks in the country, there’s a lot for Nussmeier to be proud of, but he’s ready to improve as the Tigers now face two more elite defenses in Arkansas and Texas A&M on the road this month.

With the injuries LSU has at wide receiver, Nussmeier has had even more on his plate, looking to be more efficient and consistent as the Tigers move deeper into SEC play.
“I thought he grew more today than in any time that he’s been here,” head coach Brian Kelly said. “You may see it differently, but the growth he was able to exhibit in that game and through the end is going to serve him well. Being in predictable passing situations with seven or eight men dropping requires a lot of patience and mobility. You have to keep the play alive and he did that later in the game much better than just forcing it down the field. We saw another version late that grew out of the things that were thrown at him tonight. Then, late in the game, the back shoulder throw, which we’ve been working a lot on and then the great throw that ties it on fourth down. Growth that’s going to skyrocket him to the next level.”
With Nussmeier at the helm and the defense playing at this level, LSU’s playoff hopes remain in tact, now at 5-1 on the season with six SEC games remaining. We’ll see if the Tigers can rise to the challenge and get to the postseason.
