LSU QB Myles Brennan steps away from football, Brian Kelly confirms
After being absent from practice on Monday, LSU quarterback Myles Brennan is reportedly stepping away from football. The news came from WWL’s Kristian Garic, who said it happened after Brennan was informed he was not the starter.
Head coach Brian Kelly confirmed the news in a tweet on Monday after practice.
“We are grateful to Myles for everything he has done for LSU Football,” Kelly said. “Myles is a great leader who has made a tremendous impact on this program, and he has earned the respect of everyone here through his commitment and love for LSU. Myles has always embodied the traits required to fulfill our mission to graduate champions, and we have full confidence those traits will help him succeed at every step of his journey moving forward.”
Garic reported that Jayden Daniels won the starting job and Garrett Nussmeier will serve as the backup. Highly touted true freshman Walker Howard will likely redshirt this season.
Myles Brennan sat out the entire 2021 season after suffering an off-the-field injury two days before the start of training camp. In 2020, the former St. Stanislaus standout appeared in three games, all starts, before suffering injury against Missouri that ultimately ended his season.
In 2020, he completed 79-of-131 passes for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns. That followed his 2019 National Championship winning season as Joe Burrow’s backup. Brennan completed 24-of-40 passes for 353 yards and one touchdown.
Brennan played sparingly his first two seasons in Baton Rouge.
According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, he was the No. 125 overall prospect in the country and No. 8 quarterback nationally.

Myles Brennan won’t be LSU’s next starting QB
Offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock gave a timeline for the decision to be made last week during his press conference. He pointed out the decision belongs to Brian Kelly.
It’s likely going to come when the Tigers need to buckle down and get ready to win games this season, though it could happen earlier.
“There comes a line of demarcation of we’ve got to get ready to win game one and who gives us the best opportunity to do that,” Mike Denbrock said. “We’re not, as you know, anywhere close to that yet but those decisions will be made by Coach Kelly, obviously, when that cutoff happens. And, hopefully, it’s an easy decision.
“Maybe somebody actually really separated themselves enough where it’s so obvious that the decision happens sooner. Maybe there’s two guys that are just battling each other and it’s awesome–maybe it’s three. The more the merrier at times. But we also got to get ready to play the season and get ready to win football games.”
