LSU QB Rickie Collins plans to enter NCAA Transfer Portal
The first NCAA Transfer Portal news of the offseason is in for LSU as backup quarterback Rickie Collins declared his intentions to transfer out of the program during the upcoming portal window.
The news, which was first reported by On3’s Hayes Fawcett on Sunday, comes after an 8-4 season that saw Garrett Nussmeier go coast-to-coast as the starting quarterback.
With Nussmeier potentially returning for a second season as the team’s starting quarterback next fall, the news of at least one of LSU’s quarterbacks making the decision to transfer doesn’t come as a surprise in the portal era, which allows one penalty-free transfer to all underclassmen.
Collins spent two years with the Tigers as a backup quarterback. He was 7-for-7 for 38 yards passing in four games played. Collins stepped in as the backup to Nussmeier when he exited the game earlier this season, but Nussmeier’s extended exit while being evaluated for an injury in Saturday’s win over Oklahoma saw former Vanderbilt quarterback AJ Swann, who transferred to LSU this offseason, step in ahead of Collins.
