Head Coach Brian Kelly takes the field as the LSU Tigers take on the Nicholls Colonels at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024.

The format Saturday morning in Tiger Stadium will look a bit different than past springs or than was even anticipated about a month ago.

But, traditional spring game or not, LSU football players said they’re excited to take their home field and show the fan base some of their offseason work in this weekend’s open practice event.

“We’ve got the best fans in the country, and every time we get to play in front of ’em, we wanna go put on a show for them.” senior linebacker West Weeks said. “So it’s always a blessing for us to be able to do that, so it’s real fun.”

LSU announced March 14 it would nix that planned spring game instead in favor of an open practice, free to fans, that would include a scrimmage segment and post-practice autograph session.

The Tigers joined a growing list of programs either canceling their spring games entirely or tweaking the format to a different style of “spring showcase” or open practice opportunity.

“It’s just another practice because we’re not gonna have, like, a real spring game,” sophomore offensive lineman D.J. Chester said. “But when we had the coaches’ clinic, I feel like it’s gonna be similar to that, just the people. I don’t think it’s gonna be as loud, the crowd noise, but I kind of want to show the fans what the ’25 season has in store for the LSU Tigers.”

Said senior defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory: “Just to get a chance for people’s families to come see them wear the purple and gold for the first time, it’ll just be a special moment for everybody.”

Gates are scheduled to open at 9:30 a.m. with on-field action from about 10:35 a.m. to 12:25 p.m, followed by the on-field autograph session.

Fans will receive a commemorative poster for the autograph session, but will also be permitted to bring one item to stadium for players and coaches to sign.

The university’s typical “Geaux Clear” bag policy will be in effect, with fans also allowed to bring one factory-sealed water bottle, 32 ounces or smaller, into the stadium.

“This’ll be our 13th time doing it, so it’ll be a good little change-up for us to go out there and have a little bit of an environment rather than just being in straight practice mode,” Weeks said. “So it’ll be fun for us to be able to go out there and just compete.”
