Two-sport freshman Trey’Dez Green made his debut on the hardwood on Saturday night when LSU faced No. 4 Alabama on the road, checking in early in the first half and ending the game with two points, three rebounds, one block, and one turnover in nine minutes of action.

That includes the highlight of the night for the Tigers in an 80-73 loss as he blocked a 3-point shot and went down the court for a one-handed slam in the first half.

Green joined the team in January, after LSU football’s bowl game win where Green had six catches and two touchdowns.

Out of high school, Green was a star two-sport athlete at 6-foot-8, but as a five-star prospect on the gridiron as a tight end, Green knew his highest upside was in football, a sport that was still relatively new to him. He committed to LSU and quickly talked to Matt McMahon and the program about also joining the basketball team once the season was over. McMahon obliged and now with a couple key injuries and a 1-4 star, Green got on the court for the first time and held his own.

“Trey’Dez has started practice,” McMahon said earlier this month. “There’s an acclimation process. He started with individual workouts, he’s done very well there. He’s now starting to work his way into 5-on-5 live practice and has been really good here his first week with the team.”

With Green now getting on the court for the basketball team, his athleticism is on full display and it’s what makes him an enticing prospect as a tight end for Brian Kelly and the football program heading into 2025. After losing AMson Taylor, Green is expected to have a significant role in the offense next eyar as he polishes his game. He’ll always have the athleticism of a basketball player on the field, but is now taking the next steps in becoming an all-around star.

“Watching him play, all of the complexities of playing the tight end position can be eliminated by playing him more in a wide receiver role and we’re getting to that point where that has to happen,” Kelly said before the bowl game. “He’s a talented player. We saw him on the touchdown how easy it is for him to flash his hands and catch the football. He just gives us more versatility, so I think you’re going to see that more moving forward.”

It’s unclear what Green’s role will be on the court moving forward, but he certainly provided a spark and fit in alongside Corey Chest, Daimion Collins, and other high-level athletes for McMahon’s squad. The Tigers take on Auburn at home next, a chance for Green to potentially make his debut in the PMAC.
