BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU senior Luis Hernandez is ranked No. 10 on the D1Baseball.com list of the Top 50 Catchers in the nation.

Hernandez, who transferred to LSU last summer from Indiana State, was a 2024 First-Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, batting .359 (89-for-248) with 14 doubles, 23 homers and 76 RBI.

Hernandez, a first baseman, catcher and designated hitter at Indiana State, was a 2024 ABCA All-Midwest Region selection. The native of Gurabo, Puerto Rico, was also voted to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Defensive Team.

He was a member of Puerto Rico’s national team that claimed a silver medal in September at the U23 Baseball World Cup in Shaoxing, China, where he hit .350 (7-for-20) with two doubles and four RBI.

Earlier this month, Hernandez was listed No. 6 among the Perfect Game Baseball Top 75 Seniors for the 2025 season.

LSU, ranked No. 2 by Baseball America and No. 3 by D1 Baseball in preseason polls, opens the season at 2 p.m. CT on Friday, February 14, when the Tigers play host to Purdue Fort Wayne in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

Jay Johnson talked about Hernandez in his opening press conference last week:

“With the group, specifically, really pleased with Luis Hernandez. When you see a guy who had 23 homers and is coming from a great program in Indiana State, who was in the Super Regionals a couple years ago and he was a mainstay on that team. That experience is really valuable and we were fortunate his coach took another job at another school so he decided to go to the portal, then got through the draft, but the unknown was he didn’t catch a lot last year because they had a great defensive catcher, but he’s exceeded all of my expectations with where he’s at defensively and obviously we see a really good hitter in there. He uses his experience as a benefit in that regard.”

With the coming weeks about finding the right combinations before LSU’s season starts, Johnson continues to leave no stone unturned as he has a completely new team and looks for the right answers early in the year.

“The plan over the scrimmages will be that two of them are going to catch a full day then DH then other two will DH then catch,” Johnson said. “Then you have to work in who needs more reps based on who receives a certain type of pitcher better, so again, it’s another deal where we have some sorting out to do.”
