If there’s one thing we know about Steven Milam, he’s not afraid of the being in the spotlight in the biggest moments for LSU. Before the start of the NCAA Tournament, the 5-foot-8 freshman second baseman debuted a new addition to his already bleached hair: Purple Tiger stripes.

Those stripes were on full display as he tossed his helmet rounding third base after hitting a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, securing the 4-3 win for LSU on Friday afternoon in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Milam had two solo home runs in the win, scoring the first and final run for LSU vs. a quality Wofford team. In between those came a pair of solo shots from Michael Braswell and Jared Jones in the eighth inning. In total, the Tigers had four home runs in the final three innings to steal a comeback win over the Terriers and remain in the winners bracket in the Chapel Hill regional.

LSU only had six hits in total in the win, going 6-of-29 at the plate, but the power proved to be too much for Wofford to overcome in the end. On the mound, Gage Jump led the way for the Tigers, going 7 and 1/3 innings with nine strikeouts to zero walks but allowing six hits and three earned runs.

It was too strong of an outing to lose in the postseason and luckily for LSU, the bats finally woke up and did their jobs. Gavin Guidry and Griffin Herring came in to get the final five outs the Tigers needed and did so on six and 17 pitches to remain available and fresh this weekend.

The Tigers have now won 19 of their last 25 games and continue to find new ways to win games. Head coach Jay Johnson talked about winning games both with their pitching and with their bats in the lead up to the postseason and now, they continue to help one another out in hopes to make a deep run.

Now, the Tigers await tonight’s game between the host North Carolina and the four-seed Long Island. The two face off at 6 p.m. in Chapel Hill. It is expected that LSU pitches its other ace in Luke Holman for that matchup. North Carolina enters as the favorites to win the region as one of the top teams in the nation, but the Tigers are a confident squad with ample experience against top teams.

“I have great respect for their program,” Johnson said of north Carolina before the tournament. “Kind of like LSU, they had a long stretch with Omaha trips. They’re one of the best brands in the sport, so I think it’s awesome.”
