Friday brought news of more LSU football players planning to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal when it opens to underclassmen on December 9.

LSU cornerbacks Jyaire Brown and Bernard Causey and linebacker Xavier Atkins all plan to enter the transfer portal, per multiple reports.

In the case of all three, the search for playing time is likely the driving force behind the decision to leave LSU and enter the portal.

Atkins, a former 4-star prospect who signed with the Tigers as part of the 2024 class, played in five games and logged 31 snaps at linebacker for LSU during his true freshman season this fall, but the Tigers turned to fellow freshman linebacker Davhon Keys – who finished the regular season with 172 snaps – as the team’s third linebacker after the loss of Harold Perkins to a season-ending injury.

LSU signed four linebackers on Wednesday in four-stars Jaiden Braker, Zach Weeks, Charles Ross and Keylan Moses.

Brown logged just 34 snaps in four games this season, finishing the year with three tackles as a backup cornerback. Brown spent his first two college seasons at Ohio State before transferring to Baton Rouge, and with LSU returning a handful of young cornerbacks, adding 5-star DJ Pickett and 4-star Aidan Anding as signees on Wednesday, and the likelihood of adding at least one cornerback in the portal, Brown’s departure doesn’t come as a surprise.

The same goes for Causey, a fellow cornerback who didn’t log any game action for the Tigers on defense this season in a room short on depth, making the true freshman’s decision to depart one that isn’t a surprising one for the New Orleans native.

LSU is now at 10 players who have publicly announced their intention to transfer.

Two years ago, LSU had 18 scholarship players enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. Meanwhile, the Tigers added 14 players from the Transfer Portal. One year ago, LSU had 21 players enter the portal while the Tigers added nine players to the roster as offseason transfers.

While transfers can’t have contact with college coaches until December 9, LSU head coach Brian Kelly was firm with his stance of becoming more aggressive in adding talent during the December transfer portal window, which closes on December 28.
