In January, LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels passed up the chance to enter the NFL Draft and return for his fifth season of college football.

After helping guide the Tigers to a 10-win season and SEC West title, Daniels is now circled as one of the top quarterbacks in the country.

On Tuesday, On3 ranked the Top 10 quarterbacks ahead of the 2023 college football season.

Daniels checked in as the highest-ranked quarterback in the SEC and the No. 7 quarterback at the FBS level.

“Daniels’ performance in 2022 had the Tigers getting serious consideration for the College Football Playoff,” said the On3 staff. “He threw for a career-best 2,913 yards in addition to 17 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also rushed for 885 yards and 11 touchdowns. That performance helped LSU to win the SEC West, and Daniels will hope to build upon it in 2023.”

Southern Cal quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams was ranked No. 1, followed by North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. Former Auburn quarterback and current Oregon quarterback Bo Nix landed at No. 4, followed by Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman and Florida State’s Jordan Travis.

LSU is set to face Travis and Seminoles in a potential Top 10 matchup to open the college football season in September.

Following Daniels at No. 7 was Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson and Kentucky quarterback Devin Leary.

Daniels and Jefferson were the lone two SEC quarterbacks to make the list.

Seven of the 10 quarterbacks ranked in the Top 10 transferred into their current college, including Daniels. Daniels was a three-year starter at Arizona State before transferring into LSU ahead of the 2022 season.

Daniels’ 885 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns were both the most in a single season by an LSU quarterback in program history.

He checked in at No. 2 in the school’s record books with five additional single-season marks by a quarterback, including completions (266), attempts (387), completion percentage (68.7%), touchdowns responsible for (29), and yards of total offense (3,798).

Daniels, who has started more than 40 college games between his time at ASU and LSU, is part of a quarterback room in Baton Rouge that also includes sophomore Garrett Nussmeier and incoming freshman Rickie Collins.

Former LSU quarterback Walker Howard, who was part of the LSU team as a true freshman this past season, transferred to Ole Miss. The Tigers will move through the 2023 season with three scholarship quarterbacks, the same number head coach Brian Kelly had on roster during his debut season this past fall.
