In LSU’s 74-63 loss to Pitt on Friday in West Virginia, LSU lost one of its key frontcourt contributors as Daimion Collins left the game late in the first half with an apparent shoulder injury. Collins did not return to the court or the bench during the game.

The 6-foot-9 center out of Texas is in his second season at LSU but missed most of last season with a shoulder injury and had to get it surgically repaired before returning this season. Matt McMahon gave his outlook on Collins’ injury after the game.

“I don’t have an update,” head coach Matt McMahon said. “It’s the same shoulder he had repaired last year, so our concern is at a high level, but I don’t have any diagnosis at all yet.”

LSU had just got Derek Fountain back from injury for this game against Pitt and without Collins, Fountain and Corey Chest off the bench will have even more significant roles moving forward. The Tigers are now 4-1 on the season and play the loser of UCF and Wisconsin on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT

LSU Head coach Matt McMahon postgame quotes

On going small and Jalen Reed

“We made the decision to go to four guards to play smaller and get some offense going and it paid dividends and got us back in the game, but then there late it hurt us in some ball screen coverages and on the glass. In the second half Jalen Reed played with a lot more physicality and we were able to put some shooters around him that got him some more room. When we played our big lineups the floor was so tight and compact, we were really struggling to score. The four guard move had some benefits but it hurt us late on the glass.”

On the positives from the game…

“I liked our offensive rebounding today. Clearly, we had plenty of chances to chase misses and we got 14 offensive rebounds, but when you turn the ball over 15 times it makes it really difficult on you. Then we fouled and they had some veteran guards who went to the line and didn’t miss so credit for them for closing out the game.”

On LSU’s effort…

“It wasn’t an effort problem. They’re an experienced team. Their guards were terrific. The point guard was excellent. We had too many mistakes in a tough grind it out game. Our ball security and discipline was just not good enough. Good thing for us, there’s a lot we can learn from and get better and we know that regardless of the outcome of this second game, we’re going to be playing a really good team on Sunday.”

On the day off between games…

“We’ll need it because it was a battle and a grind it out game. We have to evaluate Daimion and what his status will be and if any changes are necessary from a personnel standpoint:”
