The LSU football program is staying active in the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Now, the Tigers have added one of the biggest pieces to date.

Syracuse cornerback Duce Chestnut, who entered the transfer portal in December, has committed to LSU.

Chestnut played two seasons at Syracuse, and he landed on the On3 Freshman All-America Team following the 2021 season after opening up his debut season on the On3 Preseason All-America Team. As a freshman, Chestnut started in every game for the Orange, finishing the year with three interceptions and eight pass breakups.

After the 2022 season ended, Chestnut put his name into the transfer portal.

In two seasons with the Orange, Chestnut started in all 24 games he appeared in, logging 83 tackles, including 59 solo stops, to go with five tackles for loss and four interceptions.

Chestnut left high school in New Jersey ranked as the No. 459 overall recruit in the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus. He signed on with Syracuse as a three-star and the No. 39 cornerback prospect in the class, and he stuck with the Orange despite efforts from LSU, Ohio State, Miami and others to flip him late in the cycle.

LSU’s cornerback total through the portal this offseason now sits at three, with Johnson joining former Texas A&M cornerback Denver Harris and former Southeastern cornerback Zy Alexander.

The Tigers have now landed eight total players through the portal.

“This group helps fill some immediate needs for our team,” LSU head coach Brian Kelly said. “Our staff did a great job of vetting each of these players to make sure they fit our program, not only from an ability standpoint, but more importantly, ensuring they are high character young men who are committed to academics.

“It’s important that when you add transfers to your roster, they have the traits we are looking for as we continue our mission to Graduate Champions. Along with the outstanding group of freshmen we signed (in December), we feel with this group of young men will significantly improve our roster for the present and the future of LSU football.”
