Out of high school, LSU’s Trey’Dez Green was a five-star tight end at 6-foot-7, despite being relatively new to the sport. As a kid, it was basketball that dominated a lot of his time and he became excellent, earning a DI offer from Louisiana Monroe early in his high school career, before it became clear he was playing football at the next level.

Green transferred from East Feliciana to Zachary for his senior year and was barred from playing basketball as a result, something he tried to get overturned, but was unsuccessful. Once he signed with LSU to play football, he got in touch with LSU men’s basketball head coach Matt McMahon to see if he could also participate in basketball after the football season.

McMahon obliged, giving him a spot on the roster entering the year, knowing that it took a backseat to any and everything football. The addition did not effect the Tigers’ 13 scholarship spots either.

On Tuesday night, Green suited up for the first time on the basketball court in the purple and gold and was on the bench for the Tigers’ 78-74 win over Arkansas. Green is just one week into joining the program and McMahon commented on his status after the game.

“Trey’Dez has started practice,” McMahon said. “There’s an acclimation process. He started with individual workouts and has done very well there. He’s now starting to work his way into five on five live practice and he’s been really good in his first week with the team.”

Green contributing or playing any meaningful minutes this year is unlikely, but he’s still living out his dream of playing both in his first year of college. With his size and athleticism, he’s at the very least a valuable player in practices, but McMahon is assuredly going to be careful with him to keep him out of harms way, knowing football is his where he’s set to make a living in the future.

On the football field, Green ended his freshman year with 13 receptions for four touchdowns and 101 yards, showing that potential in the bowl game win where LSU was without Mason Taylor, capping his first football season.

Here’s a great package from NBC Local / Fox 44 from when he was a junior, talking about playing both.

The Tigers are now in their third season under head coach Matt McMahon and amid a highly competitive SEC. To this point, LSU is 12-5 overall and 1-3 in SEC play. Their win over Arkansas proved to be the first win of the season for the Tigers in conference play after dropping games to Vanderbilt, Missouri, and Ole Miss.

Next up for the Tigers is a trip to Texas A&M to take on another ranked team in the Aggies on Saturday in College Station.
