On Tuesday afternoon, LSU released its official roster for the 2024-25 men’s basketball season and on it had the expected look of 12 scholarship players and one preferred walk-on in Noah Boyde. The Tigers had taken a shot at transfer forward Coleman Hawkins a couple of weeks ago, but to no avail, further locking in their roster for Matt McMahon’s third season in Baton Rouge.

On that roster, there was one new name, though. Trey’Dez Green, the 6-foot-7 five-star freshman tight end was listed. Coming out of high school at Zachary, where he was not allowed to play basketball, Green committed to Brian Kelly and arrived on campus earlier this summer to begin summer workouts. Now, we find out that Green, who was an awesome high school basketball player in the state of Louisiana, will also be giving hoops a shot while at LSU.

Green was an impactful basketball player when he was at East Feliciana as a junior, helping his team end the year 22-9 overall and even picking up an offer from Louisiana Monroe. Throughout his life Green has been a dominant athlete and therefore able to make an impact on both the hardwood and the football field and he’ll once again test that at LSU in a walk-on type role.

Expert’s take on Green’s potential at LSU

The two-sport star, who held LSU basketball and football offers in high school, left high school as the No. 1 tight end in America, No. 2 prospect in Louisiana and No. 31 overall prospect in the class.

With his two-sport background, On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power feels LSU fans should be excited about what Green brings to the purple-and-gold.

“He has a bounce to his step that he maybe didn’t have quite as consistently as a junior. He’s made some ridiculous catches (as a senior),” Power said. “He’s a guy we’ve always been high on his upside as a big-time mismatch at tight end. He’s around 6-6, 230 pounds and has that above the rim basketball athleticism along with his bulk and ability to box out defenders in the air.”

Green’s progression is huge for LSU given the Tigers have inked some top matchup problems at the tight end position over the past couple seasons.

“I think it’s really encouraging from Trey’Dez,” Power said. “When you look at what LSU is doing at tight end under Brian Kelly, you can look at him in a couple years and they have the most talented tight end room in the country. Trey’Dez Green and Ka’Morreun Pimpton are two major mismatches. I think the prospect of having those two guys in the same room, let alone on the field at the same time, has to be tantalizing for LSU fans.”
