Kim Mulkey and LSU are back to work after Sunday’s win over Florida, looking to get a road win at Vanderbilt on Thursday night. Mulkey met with the media on Tuesday afternoon to discuss what she saw in the Florida game, Last-Tear Poa’s impact, and more. Here are the highlights of the press conference as LSU heads into the back half of the SEC schedule.

Last-Tear Poa’s impact…

“Hopefully this past game against Florida, Poa is going to continue down that path because it gives me a chance to have a great rotation when I can move Hailey [Van Lith] to the off guard some.”

On tinkering with rotations and lineups

“You just make decisions throughout the course of the game. Last year I put Carson on the bench and started Kateri. That wasn’t an individual conversation, that was based on who we needed guarding who. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who starts,it’s about who plays and Carson played well.”

What Mulkey saw in the Florida win…

“I saw grit. I saw things we emphasized during the bye week. We didn’t start out all that smooth, but the energy, the grit, the toughness was there and it sustained throughout the game. They went out and did their job.

Mikaylah Williams’ growth at LSU…

“Playing helps her grow and it doesn’t matter if she’s playing good or bad, she has to play. I can only think that the more you play, the better you’re going to get, the quicker you’re going to understand things at this level. You’ve seen some really good things from Mikaylah and then you’ve seen some things that remind you she’s a freshman, but I sure am glad I get to coach her.”

On bringing the intensity every game…

“They better bring it, because people are going to bring it to them. They have taken some licks throughout the season and they’re figuring it out that we can play this game too.”

More on Van Lith/Poa from Mulkey…

“Hailey was more comfortable because she got to play her natural position, but she was also very good when she played the point. When you can have Hailey and Poa on the floor together, we’re good. That doesn’t mean we’re better than if they weren’t on the floor, but we’re good with them.”

Mulkey’s thoughts on Flau’Jae Johnson…

“Flau’Jae gets down on herself. She had the second most shots in that game. Were they good shots? OK, shoot them again. She just has to quit getting down on herself and thinking she has to do everything perfectly. Be a good leader for us and be a good defensive player for us. We have different players who can contribute at different times.”
