Miami three-star offensive line commit Connor Lew had a positive visit from Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal Saturday night, but the Georgia native stopped shy of saying he was completely closing his recruitment.

“I am committed to Miami, but I wouldn’t be surprised if things heat up before signing day,” Lew said when asked if he is fully committed to Miami or if he is keeping his options open. “Just wanted to reaffirm I am NOT looking to leave Miami – I just would not be surprised if schools reached out as a last-ditch effort.”

Lew did not elaborate on which schools are still actively recruiting him or if he would consider one of those schools that might make that last-ditch effort.

Lew said he was pleased with his in-home visit from Cristobal and Mirabal which came five months after his August 5 commitment to Miami. Lew chose the Hurricanes over Georgia, Auburn and Clemson, among others. He is the No. 48 recruit in the state of Georgia and the country’s No. 46 interior offensive lineman, according to the On3 Consensus. He also is one of five offensive line commits for Miami this year and the Canes’ third-highest rated offensive line commit.

“The whole visit was really relaxed (in a good way) and felt very casual,” Lew said. “We talked about how this class is going to be the foundation for the years to come and how similar this class’ mentality is.”

Lew said both coaches emphasized during the visit that he’ll play a major role as a center in leading the offensive and the Hurricanes as a whole. He also said he is bought into Cristobal’s vision for rebuilding the team.

“I know this year did not meet coach Cristobal’s expectations, but this class is going to come in and work hard. We want to be a part of returning Miami to the top,” Lew said. “I am bought into coach Cristobal’s vision, and I am willing to do whatever it takes to restore The U!”

Kennesaw Mountain High School head coach Caleb Carmean previously told CaneSport Lew excelled in his senior season thanks to a high football IQ and that Mirabal is excited for Lew to arrive in Miami in January to begin developing him.

CANESPORT’S TAKE

Miami still seems to be the No. 1 option for Lew, but he wouldn’t be surprised if others to contact him in these final few weeks. Remember, this was a prospect who also was being recruited to Georgia, which is about 90 minutes from his hometown and who was highly coveted by other Power Five programs. He may not be actively looking to decommit from the Canes, but simply declaring that he’s not ruling out any and all other possibilities before signing day could be perceived as cause for a little bit of concern. He’s not completely shutting the door.
