With the NCAA transfer portal now “open for business” with college coaches now permitted to begin recruiting athletes in the portal, here are six transfer portal athletes Miami has started targeting.

OL Javion Cohen, Jr., Alabama (Phenix City (Ala.) Central High)

After starting 25 of 27 games at left guard for Alabama in two seasons with the Tide, Javion Cohen is probably Miami’s top transfer target. Offensive line coach Alex Mirabal visited him Wednesday. Cohen will be an immediate starter at most programs without an elite offensive line. He started 10 of 12 games this year (and came off the bench in two more games) for an Alabama offensive line that allowed 12 sacks, has two years of eligibility remaining and was on the SEC All-Freshman team in 2020. He was a top 300 recruit in the 2020 class and currently sits at 6-foot-4 and 305 pounds.

LB Francisco Mauigoa, So., Washington State (Tafuna High (Ili’ili, American Samoa)

Yes, Francisco Mauigoa. Not Francis Mauigoa. Francisco is the older brother of Francis, Miami’s 2023 five-star offensive tackle commit currently at IMG Academy, but it’s safe to say that football talent runs in the family. Francisco, who will visit Miami this weekend, is fresh off a breakout sophomore season at Washington State where he tallied 60 total tackles, three forced fumbles, an interception, a fumble recovery and a touchdown and helped lead the Cougars to a bowl game for a second straight season. At 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, the former three-star recruit has blossomed into a reliable starter capable of making an impact at the Power Five level.

LB Justin Flowe, Jr., Oregon (Upland (Ca.) Upland High)

Mario Cristobal recruited Justin Flowe to Oregon, but this one will be a tough get since most indications are Flowe will stay on the west coast. Flowe is the country’s former No. 1 linebacker and No. 6 national recruit and was a five-star recruit in the 2020 class according to the On3 Consensus. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder had two injury-plagued seasons at Oregon. He played in two games in his first two seasons, and this season he missed two games as well. If he stays healthy, he’s a fantastic talent who would absolutely play immediately at Miami.

Miami portal Davonte Brown

DB Davonte Brown, Jr., UCF (Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage)

This one feels fairly clear. After starting three seasons at UCF and playing all 36 games of his college career to this point, junior cornerback Davonte Brown has proved his value on the field as a player capable of making an immediate impact in most secondaries. To make him more enticing, his brother, Damari Brown is an uncommitted four-star 2023 athlete also being recruited by Miami. Davonte has two years of eligibility left, is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound defender with three career interceptions and 21 pass deflections. This is an instance where both brothers appear to have value for the Canes at their respective positions. It makes sense. Davonte told CaneSport he has interest in playing for Miami, would like to play with his brother, and looks capable of playing right away.

WR Dorian Singer, Jr., Arizona (Phoenix (Ariz.) Pinnacle High)

Dorian Singer led the Pac-12 in receiving yards in 2022 with 1,105 yards and hauled in 66 receptions for six touchdowns. He tied for the Pac-12 lead with five receptions of 40 yards or more and entered the portal with two years of eligibility remaining. He’s a former unranked preferred walk-on at Arizona who now ranks as a four-star transfer at 6 feet and 172 pounds. While he lacks blazing speed, Singer is a proven playmaker who would be an asset in the Miami receiving corps.

WR Dominic Lovett, So., Missouri (Bellville (Il.) East St. Louis High)

Dominic Lovett emerged as one of the top targets in the SEC in 2022, finishing with the third-most receiving yards in the SEC with 846 yards. He also hauled in in 56 catches and three touchdowns and is a four-star transfer at 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds. A player as dynamic as Lovett should be capable of giving the Miami receiving corps an instant boost.
