BREAKING: 4-star EDGE Herbert Scroggins commits to Miami - "We’re going to have a D that dominates and gets to that quarterback"
Less than a week removed from his official visit to Miami, the Hurricanes have landed a commitment from Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine Military four-star EDGE Herbert “Third” Scroggins, who announced his pledge to the Canes Friday morning.
“I really chose Miami because that was an easy decision for me and my family,” Scroggins told CaneSport. “The academics played a big part in it as well, and the coaches too.”
Heading into his official visit last weekend to Coral Gables, Scroggins explained that the Auburn Tigers were the team to beat in his recruitment. That changed after getting to see what Miami had to offer on and off the field.

“It played a big impact,” Scroggins said. “Heading into that Tuesday, I was leaning towards Auburn more. But when I took the official visit down to Miami, we really hit. I connected with the coaches and everybody.”
Following his OV, Scroggins, who is the No. 375 overall prospect and No. 33 EDGE in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, had an extensive conversation with Mario Cristobal and defensive line coach Jason Taylor, which essentially sealed the deal.
“After I took the official visit, I sat down and talked with coach Cristobal and coach Taylor,” Scroggins explained. “That’s when I kind of knew. I went back home and then sat down with my family, and we went over the good things and the bad things, and Miami really didn’t have any bad things.”

The Hurricanes staff has told the 6-foot-3, 215-pounder that they envision him playing the JACK role on defense, which is a hybrid between EDGE rusher and an outside linebacker. As a junior, Scroggins racked up 84 tackles, 12 sacks, and 10tackles for loss.
“They want me getting after the quarterback and doing a little bit of dropping back in coverage,” Scroggins said. “It’s pretty similar to what I do in high school.”
His message to the Canes fans?
“Tell them I’m home,” Scroggins said. “When that third and long comes, you already know I’m going to be back there getting that sack.”
CaneSport’s take
Cristobal and the Canes are rolling right now on the recruiting trail with this third commit this week. Miami’s 2025 class is now up to 14 pledges, and it doesn’t look like things will be slowing down anytime soon. “I believe this 2025 class can be something special,” Scroggins said. “Miami is on the come up. We’re going to have a defense that dominates and gets back to that quarterback.”
