BREAKING: 4-star WR Malachi Toney re-commits to Miami Hurricanes
Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage four-star 2025 receiver Malachi Toney has re-committed to Miami, capping a chaotic month-long stretch in the recruitment of the No. 365 overall prospect and No. 53 receiver.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound wideout’s recommitment comes after Toney decommitted from Miami Oct. 3, which came shortly after his decision to reclassify from the 2026 class to 2025. Miami kept in constant communication with Toney — led by receivers coach Kevin Beard and featuring occasional contact with head coach Mario Cristobal — and continued to prioritize the four-star receiver as he considered programs like Kentucky, Colorado and others. Miami ultimately won out over other top programs.
Toney cancelled his Kentucky official visit this past weekend in order to visit Miami Saturday for the Hurricanes’ game against Florida State. He previously told CaneSport his relationship hadn’t changed with the Hurricanes’ staff since his decommitment from Miami and that he was still heavily considering the Canes.
It all came to fruition on Monday.
“It’s been the same,” Toney recently said of his relationship with Miami’s staff. “They’re still showing me love. It’s still a family. I still have my bonds with all of the coaches and stuff like that. It’s all the same.”
Toney’s playing style has been compared to Miami receiver Xavier Restrepo thanks to his stocky build, crisp route running and reliability from the slot position – he remained one of the Hurricanes’ top 2025 receiver targets even after reclassifying from the 2026 class to this year’s cycle. Toney did not visit another program since his decommitment but visited Alabama just days before deciding to re-open his recruitment.

Alabama was not viewed as a major player for Toney after reclassifying to this year’s class, although the Tide had long shown significant interest in Toney as a member of the 2026 cycle.
Toney is expected to sign during the Early Signing Period Dec. 4 but will likely be a summer enrollee.
CaneSport’s Take
We’ve been pretty thoroughly documenting in our stories and on our message board for the last month we believed Toney would end up back in Miami’s recruiting class, although when specifically he would pull the trigger remained a question. But now that he’s formally back in Miami’s 2025 class, I’d be VERY surprised if he doesn’t sign as a Hurricane Dec. 4.
