BREAKING: 4-star LB Gavin Nix commits to Miami over FSU and Oregon - "Definitely going to bring a national championship to the 305"
Since the Miami Hurricanes offered IMG Academy four-star linebacker Gavin Nix, the program has made him feel wanted in Coral Gables. Throughout his recruiting process, that has remained the same and is one of the top reasons Nix announced his commitment to the Canes on Monday evening.
“The main thing was the consistency they showed me and my family,” Nix told CaneSport. “This recruiting process has truly been a journey, but no matter what the love they showed me has always been consistent. The trajectory and the vision that coach (Mario) Cristobal has are some things that I want to be a part of.”
In the end, for Nix, who is the No. 153 overall prospect in the 2025 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, it came down to two programs. He took official visits in June to Miami, Oregon and Florida State.
“For me, it really came down to Miami and Oregon,” Nix said. “I went on my Miami OV first, and I went in there with an open mind. Right after my Oregon OV, I got that internal feeling that I wanted to be a Cane. It just filled all my needs, even outside of football. The city is ever-growing, and the connections down there are ridiculous, and like I said, just something I want to be a part of.”
When Nix informed Miami’s coaches of his choice to commit to the program, linebackers coach Derek Nicholson was on vacation in Puerto Rico and had to calm down after being overcome with joy.
“It was crazy because they were actually out on vacation,” Nix said. “They were telling coach Nicholson to sit down because he was just so happy and screaming. It was great, and they were all excited. It was truly a blessing to see the impact that I was able to make. I’m looking forward to getting ready to work.”

Nix is now the third linebacker pledge in the Hurricanes’ 2025 class, joining Elijah Melendez and Ezekiel Marcelin, two players the 5-foot-11.5, 225-pounder is familiar with.
“Those guys are great people,” Nix said. “I played against Ezekiel my sophomore year, and he balled out, and he’s a dog. And Elijah and I are actually from the same city, so we chop it up whenever we are back home. I’m looking forward to playing with those guys, and Miami is LB U. We are going to keep that tradition going. It’s going to be fun playing with those guys and playing under coach Nicholson because he’s super passionate, and it’s like he’s going to be in the fight with us.”
Nix’s message to the Canes fans?
“They’re going to get someone who is ready to come in and work,” Nix said. “Pouring my 110% into the program as a whole each and every day. Someone who is willing to continue to bring up the people around me for greater success. Most definitely going to bring a national championship to the 305.”
CaneSport’s take
This was another big win on the recruiting trail for the Canes, landing Nix over Oregon and Florida State. Over the last two years, Nix has been a staple in the center of IMG Academy’s defense, and he looks poised to continue to do just that this upcoming fall.
