Miami Hurricanes 4-star LB commit Gavin Nix completes flip to Oregon
IMG Academy four-star linebacker Gavin Nix completed his flip from Miami to Oregon Tuesday, following through on something that was widely speculated following the Ducks’ all-out push for the top-300 linebacker this fall.
Nix announced his flip to Oregon on social media after four days of buzz he could leave Miami and flip to the Ducks. Miami successfully fought off an attempt from Oregon to flip him earlier this fall after getting Nix to campus for the Hurricanes’ game against Florida State, although Oregon continued to pursue the four-star prospect through the month of November.
Nix planned to sign with the Hurricanes after attending the Florida State game and was solid with Miami for most of last month, although Oregon’s all-out push Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday gave him something to thin about. Nix wrestled with his decision Monday and was 50-50 on the direction he could go, although Tuesday he announced his intent to join the Ducks’ class.
Nix’s flip comes after Miami lost four-star safety commit Hylton Stubbs to Florida Monday and parted ways with three-star cornerback commit Tim Merritt Tuesday amid a long flirtation with Tennessee. Miami is still expected to sign the remaining 20 members of its class.
The Hurricanes are still pursuing four-star Ohio State linebacker commit TJ Alford, who was back in Columbus this weekend, although the Buckeyes are making it difficult on Miami. The Hurricanes are also hoping to flip four-star Ohio State defensive tackle commit Jarquez Carter, Five-Star Plus+ LSU cornerback commit DJ Pickett and four-star Florida cornerback commit Ben Hanks, among other recruits committed elsewhere, although the clock is ticking on Miami’s chances.

Miami has also remained in the mix for uncommitted four-star top-100 linebacker Kellen Wiley, who is expected to make a decision Tuesday night before announcing Wednesday. He plans to sign with a school Wednesday, although Texas has received plenty of buzz in recent weeks.
CaneSport’s Take
Nix’s flip wasn’t something I saw coming a month ago after it looked like Miami had squashed Oregon’s threat during his visit for the Hurricanes’ game against Florida State. Nix was enthused about playing at Miami and joining a team that experienced nothing but success this fall, although Miami’s defensive struggles over the last month — especially against Syracuse at a time where Nix was already having doubts — and questions about the future of the Hurricanes’ defense worked against Miami. The developments over the last four days came as a surprise and probably sting Miami.
Miami is now down to one linebacker in the class in three-star commit Ezekiel Marcelin, who has remained solid with the Hurricanes.
