The Miami Hurricanes have landed their first commitment in the Jai Lucas era: former Indiana forward Malik Reneau.

After recently narrowing his list of schools to five, Reneau chose Miami over Arkansas, Auburn, Michigan, and USC. Before committing to Indiana out of high school, Lucas had recruited the South Florida native, and now the two are reuniting in Coral Gables.

Reneau is a four-star transfer and ranked as the No. 17 overall player. He is also the fifth-ranked power forward in the current On3 Transfer Portal Rankings after initially entering the portal on March 19.

“He was a coach at Texas and some other schools before Miami, and he’s contacted me before,” Reneau told CaneSport when asked about Lucas. “I’m open to anyone, and it’s not just Miami because it’s close to home. I’m just trying to hear everyone out to see what would be the best fit for my last year of college basketball.”

The 6-foot-8 Reneau has one more season of college eligibility remaining. This past season, he averaged 13.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists, along with a 55.2-percent field goal percentage, which ranked in the Top 50 nationally. He started 19 of his 26 games in the 2024-25 season.

During the 2023-24 season, Reneau logged career highs across the board, averaging 15.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. He started all 33 games he played for the Hoosiers as a sophomore.

A native of Miami, Reneau originally chose the Hoosiers over Miami, Florida State, Memphis, and more than 20 other offers in high school. Before his commitment to Indiana, Reneau was a verbal pledge to the Florida Gators and that was thanks in part to former UF assistant coach Erik Pastrana who is now on staff at Miami.

He was ranked as the No. 25 prospect nationally in his recruiting class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that incorporates evaluations from all four major recruiting media companies.
