Quincy (Fla.) Gadsden County three-star offensive tackle Lamar Williams had a hunch he might commit to Miami if all went well on his junior day trip to Coral Gables last Saturday. So after the Hurricanes met every expectation on his first Miami visit, it was a fairly easy decision for the 6-foot-5, 271-pound lineman.

Williams committed to Miami Friday night over programs including Florida State, Maryland, West Virginia and Georgia Tech — all of whom he said he still liked on his junior day visit — but he had no reservations announcing his commitment to the Hurricanes. The No. 432 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking said he “fell in love” with Miami on his first and only visit to campus and couldn’t wait to pull the trigger, especially considering his relationship with head coach Mario Cristobal.

“It’s basically my connection with the head coach,” Williams said. “He was a lineman, I’m a lineman, so we just clicked and gelled. We started getting along, started talking to each other, and that was it.”

Williams started receiving heavy contact from the Hurricanes after Miami offered him last summer, and he typically had daily conversations with Cristobal or offensive line coach Alex Mirabal. The two showed Williams their resume of developing offensive linemen and technical expertise, and Williams loved what he heard. The coaching staff also made a strong impression on Williams’ mother, who accompanied him on his visit last Friday and is originally from Miami.

“She was happy!” Williams said. “She likes it because it’s basically her hometown, so she loved it. We got together and talked about it. It’s basically like me going back home with my mom growing up down there, so I’m excited to get down there and have fun.”

Williams said the amount of love and attention he felt from Miami’s staff was second to none, adding he loved the way the Hurricanes recruited him during the fall season and that three Miami coaches stopped by his school earlier this week for an in-school visit before the start of the February dead period (Cristobal, offensive analyst Edwin Pata and defensive coordinator Lance Guidry). He still plans to visit other schools with more than 10 months left until signing day, but said he’s excited to commit to the Hurricanes.

“I’m so excited right now,” Williams said.

CaneSport’s Take

Last year’s Miami recruiting class may have gotten off to a slow start, but this year has been anything but. The Hurricanes now have four pledges in this year’s class with Williams’ commitment.
