BREAKING: Three-star DL Mykah Newton has flipped his commitment from NC State to Miami
Less than a month ago, the Miami Hurricanes offered Newberry (Fla.) High three-star defensive lineman Mykah Newton, who had recently committed to NC State just a week prior.
Despite his commitment to the Wolfpack, Newton knew Coral Gables was where he wanted to be, and on Friday afternoon, he made it official.
“I felt like Miami was the perfect place for me because it fits me,” Newton told CaneSport. “The coaching staff just fits who I am, and they’re very humble people. They know that there’s still room for improvement in anything, no matter if they’re perfect at it. They all have a goal, and they really fit my personality. Also, the legacy in Miami is amazing, and I just feel at home.”
Earlier this fall, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound prospect made his way down to Miami to watch one of the Hurricanes’ fall practices. Seeing the entire environment and how the coaches interacted with players was a pivotal point in Newton’s decision.
“It was amazing because it was good getting there to see how the players react to the coaches and see how everything is,” Newton said. “The coaches showed massive love to me and my family after practice and whenever they had little breaks. Getting down to see how the coaches were, as well as the academics, was amazing. I liked every single part of it.”
Following the visit, Newton, who is the No. 86 overall defensive lineman in the 2025 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, explained that this is when things really picked up in favor of the Hurricanes.
“It took me a couple of days, but I thought to myself that Miami was the place I wanted to be,” Newton said. “What really made me realize it was the feeling I felt there. I literally felt happy, and I was smiling, and I could just be myself. It just felt like. There’s nothing I could say, but it felt like home.”

Despite the Hurricanes entering the mix a bit late in Newton’s recruitment, the program’s recent push and message by defensive line coaches Jason Taylor and Joe Salave’a resonated with the three-star prospect.
“They’ve always wanted me due to my ability,” Newton said. “They think I’m a very versatile guy, and I fit their style of play and their people. I understand that, and I felt the same energy too. It wasn’t them just saying it because they meant everything they said, and I felt it.”
Now Coral Gables bound, Newton is excited to represent the Hurricanes during his final season of high school football. Newton is now the 21st member of Miami’s 2025 class and the third defensive lineman alongside Herbert Scroggins and Donta Simpson.
“My message to the Canes fan is that I’m going to throw The U up in high school every time I get a sack,” he said. “You’ve got a humble player on your hands who will make plays and make you guys and my family proud. I’m always going to compete at any level and give you my all.”
