CaneSport’s Inside The Lines: The Dan Radakovich Interview Part 2

Dan Radakovich didn’t get to hire Mario Cristobal. The Miami administration completed the deal for its new football coach while it was still working out details for its new athletic director.

But Radakovich made it clear he was totally behind the hire.

Today in Part 3 of our interview with Radakovich (watch below), we talk about Cristobal and his work ethic and who the new coach reminds Radakovich of. And the discussion also turns toward expectations and what might be reality for Miami in 2022.

Some highlights:

ON MARIO CRISTOBAL:  “I knew of Mario. I never met him prior, but I knew a lot of people that had worked with him and you know they couldn’t say enough good things about him. I think that it’s going to be a good team. You know, he’s pulled together an incredible staff. He has a really good idea of how to how to blend not only the coaches, but now the expanding quality control analysts and all the rest of that. He’s got a great strength staff. Alonzo Highsmith just joined the the organization and Alonzo has a lot of time in the football business. So the coaching staff, Kevin Steele and Charlie Strong and Joe Salave’a, Josh Gattis, and Frank Ponce, I mean these are folks that have had a number of years under their belts and I think that’s going to serve the student athletes at Miami in the best way possible.”

ON WHO HE WOULD COMPARE CRISTOBAL TO: Well, now I know why Nick Saban liked him a lot. You know, because they’re cut from very similar molds. I got to know Nick in his in his 50s at LSU. And Mario’s in the same age range right now. And they both are incredibly hard working, singular focused individuals….I stop by and see Mario and ask him how he’s doing and what we can do as an organization to make sure that the coaches and student athletes have the best opportunity to be successful.”

ON EXPECTATIONS: “To be better at the end of the year than you were at the beginning. You know, continue to show progress. I don’t want anybody to think we don’t have talent. We do. And I think there are opportunities for success. I just want people to be at Hard Rock Stadium. That’s the investment. The biggest thing is to be able to have as many people as possible. I understand Miami is a big event town. It always has been. But we just want to raise the level of the event. We want people to be invested with Hurricane football, and that’s where I think that we’re going to try to do as much as we can because we know that Mario and his staff and student athletes are going to do everything that they can.”
